Custom GNU/Linux Packages

Overview

One of the biggest drawbacks of running GNU/Linux Systems is to find a specific Distribution that matches your workflow, as well as provide a stable enough system that you can rely on your computer to work 24/7.

This is no easy task, especially when you have Distributions that cannot legally provide all of the Multimedia functionality most users want due to the fact that there are extremely restrictive Patent Laws in the United States (as well as some extremely stupid Copyright Laws - DMCA anyone).

To avoid this legal pitfall, each distribution has it's own enthusiasts create "Repositories" that provide the needed functionality to the Distro. Unfortunately these repositories are not nearly as tested or maintained as the base Distribution, thus many times quality can be lacking with these repos.

Because of this, I decided to learn how to create RPM based packages and simply roll my own Addon CDs for different Distributions. Here is a list of them:

Suse Linux / openSUSE

SLED 10 RPMs - I provide a custom Install CD for Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop. This CD adds numerous applications and nearly full Multimedia Capabilities to SLED10.

After 2+ years since it's release I still use SLED10 as my main Operating System on nearly all of the computers I use on a daily basis.

openSUSE RPMs - I also provide an Addon CD for openSUSE. Although not nearly as complete as my SLED10 CD, my openSUSE CD does add nearly all needed functionality to a stock installation for everyday use.

NIMA - Network Information & Monitoring

NIMA packages - You can download all of the packages that I created to "NIMAize" a default SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. With these packages you can fully monitor all of your network traffic.
